Tom Ford Tobacco Oud Review – It Is Worth It? Here’s What It Smells Like

A fragrance which I smelled back last year and was thinking of getting for months, I finally have it. This is Tom Ford Tobacco Oud.

Tobacco Oud is from the Private Blend collection of Tom Ford fragrances, and so is from the expensive part of the line.

So, what does it smell like, Is it worth it and how does it compare to Oud Wood?

Here’s everything you need to know about Tobacco Oud from Tom Ford in my review.

First off a bit of history. I first smelled this scent in the summer of 2023. I was getting into ouds and tried out the infamous Oud Wood. I didn’t like it, but more on that later.

As I was going through the Tom Ford scents I came across Tobacco Oud, tried it and loved it.

It never went out of my mind, so when Christmas time rolled around Santa was good to me and I got a bottle of Oud Wood.

I’ve been wearing it a few weeks, and from 2024 going forward, I can see myself loving and wearing this.

Here’s why.

What Does Tom Ford Tobacco Oud Smell Like?

Oud Wood has that smoky, boozy, woody and warm spicy sense to it that sucks you in. It just smells so masculine, a proper grown up gentleman type of scent.

There is the oud, whisky, tobacco, sandalwood, patchouli, cinnamon, benzoin, vanilla, cedarwood and more. It’s a real mix of every masculine style of scent perfectly blended together to bring out this super dark, warm and sophisticated fragrance.

How Long Does Tom Ford Tobacco Oud Last?

Tom Ford Tobacco Oud is a strong fragrance. It’s an eau de parfum, but since this is a very dark and base heavy fragrance you can expect it to last, and it does.

I was able to get 9-10 hours with this scent, it has great longevity.

How Strong Is Tom Ford Tobacco Oud?

Tom Ford Tobacco Oud is strong, as you’d expect from it’s notes. I find that it’s strong but not overpowering. It’s not a scent that you need to overspray, and you shouldn’t.

When it comes to Tobacco Oud, you’ll smell it on yourself, and others around you will too. It has a nice projection without it filling the whole room.

How Many Sprays Do You Need?

I spray Tobacco Oud sparingly. It’s strong, and also expensive! 3 Sprays on the neck, left right and centre, 2 on the chest and one on the nape of the neck.

6 Sprays of Tobacco Oud and you’re good to go.

Tom Ford Tobacco Oud Pros And Cons

Tom Ford Tobacco Oud Fragrance Bottle

The Tom Ford Tobacco Oud bottle is the same trademark bottle from the brand that it uses in it’s Private Blend line.

It’s a rectangular shape bottle which tapers off at the top where the atomiser is located. The top is the reverse of this, giving the bottle a unique shape when the top is applied.

It’s a translucent brown colour, with the branding to the front in a chrome silver label.

I have a 50ml bottle, currently the only size available. Previously there were 100ml bottles, but now it appears Tom Ford are only selling 50ml bottles for around £220.

The atomiser is good, but only provides a short sharp burst of scent, rather than a wide spray like many atomisers.

What Clothes To Wear With Tobacco Oud

A grown up masculine fragrance deserves to be worn right, and wearing formal, smart or smart-casual clothing with this is the only way of doing it justice.

It’s not a beach scent, not one for by the pool. If you’re going on a night out whether formal or informal, Tobacco Oud makes a great choice.

When To Wear Tom Ford Tobacco Oud

Since Tobacco Oud Wood is a dark style of scent, I can only recommend this is worn on an evening. I can’t really see any situation where it could be good through the day.

It’s expensive, so save this one for that special night.

Who Is Tom Ford Tobacco Oud For?

As if you hadn’t already guessed it reading the rest of this review, I’d recommend Tom Ford Tobacco Oud for older guys. I would say it’s worn best over 30, but I guess at 25+ it would be fine.

It’s a manly gentleman’s scent, mature and old, and no matter you’re age, if that’s the type of scent you like, you’ll love this.

Tom Ford Tobacco Oud vs Oud Wood

Now I have to address the elephant in the room, Oud Wood. There’s no doubt that Oud Wood is the most popular of the 2, in fact I asked at Tom Ford and they said it’s one of the most popular men’s fragrances in the Private Blend line.

So why choose Tobacco Oud over Oud Wood?

When I tried the Oud Wood it had this really bitter sweet type of note which immediately hit me.

I didn’t like it.

I think that this was Tonka bean, and I found it overpowering.

I am glad I tried that out before purchasing, because if I went with what’s popular, I would have got Oud Wood and regretted it.

Tobacco Oud on the other hand is a much more inviting and seductive smell.

As already mentioned, the smoky, boozy and woody notes are so good, and that’s what easily won me over rather than the Oud Wood.

Is Tom Ford Tobacco Oud Discontinued?

There’s plenty of rumours and discussion regarding if Tobacco Oud is discontinued. According to some, it is discontinued in their country, but I can say that it is available here in the UK (obviously, I have a bottle!)

However there was a 100ml bottle alongside the 50ml, and now there’s only 50ml.

Since getting my bottle I have checked out the Tom Ford website, and Tobacco Oud does not appear. You can still buy it in shops here in the UK, but for how long remains unclear.

This is another reason why I got it, and got it as fast as I could. I think that this will be discontinued, we’ll have to watch this space to see what happens with Tobacco Oud.

Is Tom Ford Tobacco Worth It?

Now it comes down to the cost. Tom Ford Tobacco Oud at around £220 for a 50ml bottle, Tobacco Oud just like every scent in the Private Blend line is expensive.

If you are into fragrances and want something special, I think this is worth it.

If you’re a collector it could be in your collection, and if you only buy one bottle of aftershave a year, you could make it this.

It does have competition, with Gucci Oud Intense and Acqua Di Parma Oud both being very good ouds at a much smaller price point.

For me, if you’re looking to spend a lot of money on an oud, Tobacco Oud should be considered.

Where To Buy Tom Ford Tobacco Oud

Tom Ford Tobacco Oud is available in the usual fragrance and perfume shops. I recommend going in store and trying it out. It’s available at John Lewis, Fenwick and others.

Projection – The projection is good without being over-bearing. You’ll smell it and so will others around you, without it filling the room.

Verdict

Tom Ford Tobacco Oud is a fantastic fragrance for older guys looking for a mature, sophisticated and inviting smell.

It’s dark, boozy and woody nature is warm and spicy, and should get you plenty of compliments.

I like this scent a lot and it could grow into one of my all time favourites. I look forward to wearing this one for special occasions for many years to come.
