That’s right! If you have been living under a rock for the past few days, or you just have absolutely no interest in football, the Newcastle United takeover has finally been completed.
Good news for Newcastle fans, Mike Ashley is gone and the new super wealthy owners could be worth £250 BILLION. Or to put it another way, worth more than all the owners in the Premier League COMBINED.
That’s right, Newcastle could now be the most wealthy football club in the world. Mike Ashley has sold the club to a Saudi backed takeover, in a deal said to be worth £305 Million.
The new owners are said to be a joint venture, with the Saudi Arabia backed PIF (Public Investment Fund) owning 80%, with PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media owning the rest.
Amanda Staveley is fronting the consortium, the same consortium which have been trying for a takeover for years, with it being blocked by the Premier League.
However it’s now finally been pushed through, and there’s once again excitement in Newcastle and St. James’ Park.
What does it mean for the club?
It’s still very early days. Amanda Staveley has gone on record as saying it’s a long term investment, and that they want to ensure Newcastle are competing for trophies. She has even gone on record as to saying the Premier League title is a realistic target within 5 – 10 years.
But of course we are fans, and we can dream big. The talks of M’Bappe, Haaland and the likes have been going round for a long time, now the deal is done there’s even more talk of fantasy football.
But of course in reality there needs to be some serious building on and off the pitch for that level of success. I think we could be a few years off being able to attract the likes of an M’Bappe and Haaland, but at least now the dream is there.
There does need to be investment in players, this has been known for years. Newcastle currently sit 19th, aka 2nd bottom of the league without a win.
The transfer window doesn’t open until January, and I think we will see movements in that. It could be spending a large amount, but I think we’re still far off seeing £100m players. More like spending £100M on a few players to improve the starting 11 and the squad as a whole.
Although people are stating the worth of the new owners, there isn’t a number being put forward as to how much will be invested in players. It’s unlikely to see billions in 2 or 3 short years, if not for those pesky ‘financial fair play’ rules.
If you liken this to the Man City takeover which happened in 2008, they won their first Premier League title in 2012. But you can argue that the Premier League is stronger and tougher now, and we still don’t know exactly how much will be pumped into the club.
But with all of that said, it’s about the dream and excitement which we have again. It could be a very exciting time to be a Newcastle fan once again. But as always, we’ll have to wait and see what the future holds.
This was my TV screen the day and night it happened. It’s all that was on my TV for the whole day and night. The city is buzzing and is so happy that this takeover has finally happened.
