It’s a fragrance battle which has been a long time coming, and it’s all about the iconic Sauvage.
So you might be thinking which is better, Dior Sauvage Elixir or Sauvage Eau De Toilette.
If you’re in the market for Sauvage but can’t decide which version to get, I’m going to break down each of these great scents.
I’ve had both for a while, and these are my thoughts.
Dior Sauvage Eau De Toilette
The first from the modern Sauvage line was Dior Sauvage EDT aka eau de toilette.
This was released back in 2015, so is 7 years old now, and can be considered to be a modern classic.
I got this scent when it was released and instantly loved it. I wasn’t the only one, with so many guys loving this scent, and many fragrance lovers calling this one of the best fragrances of all time.
It’s loved by girls and guys alike, and is one of the most attractive fragrances you can wear. It has that modern masculine style but with a youthful edge, making it a brilliant scent for a night out.
Sauvage EDT is well balanced and can work for basically everyone wanting that gentlemanly smell. I would say it does edge on the more youthful side, but still works for basically any guy at any age.
Notes – Bergamot, Ambroxan, Geranium, Pepper, Lavender, Vetiver, Patchouli
Dior Sauvage Elixir
Dior decided to release a few variants for the Sauvage line, and the latest was Sauvage Elixir which was released recently in 2021.
Since this was the most expensive in the line and I already owned the EDT, I sampled this in store to ensure that I like it and it was different enough to the original EDT.
I was happy to find that it was both. It has a distinctively different smell to the EDT while still keeping the original DNA of the line.
What does this mean?
I think that the Elixir is less punchier and sharper than the EDT. The Elixir has stronger notes in the base such as liquorice and amber which shine through and give this more of a darker tone.
This gives it more of a mature vibe, so I think it’s better suited to older guys over the youthful EDT.
Which Sauvage Lasts The Longest?
You’re probably going to think that the stronger perfume concentration will win, and that is Elixir. But no, Sauvage EDT lasts longer than Elixir in my experience.
This is possibly due to the top notes in the EDT being incredibly strong and therefore you notice them a lot more, while the Elixir has stronger notes in the base which are a lot more subtle.
Which Sauvage Has The Best Projection?
Just like above, I find that Sauvage EDT has better projection than Elixir. Once again this is for the same reasons, with the stronger base notes in the Elixir being more subtle and the top notes in the EDT being really out there.
Which Is The Most Versatile?
Both the EDT and Elixir are quite versatile, and a lot will come down to the occasion you wear and also your age. But I would say that the Elixir just edges it over being more versatile.
The original Sauvage EDT has gained a reputation of being a scent ladies love, a party and clubbing fragrance, while Elixir hasn’t gained that reputation as of yet.
That makes Elixir more acceptable in more situations such as wearing to the office, and is therefore a more versatile fragrance.
Which Gets The Most Compliments?
There’s no doubt that both gets compliments, but once again this round has to go with the EDT.
It’s always felt like the EDT has been a scent to get compliments, and even if it wasn’t made for that reason it definitely does.
Elixir is a more rounded and mature style of scent, so while it smells really good it’s not as head turning as the OG. Having said that since it’s a lot newer than the original, it does have that going for it for turning heads.
The Best Value
Sauvage Elixir is around double the price of the EDT. For this reason if you’re looking for value, you have to go the EDT.
Sauvage Elixir vs Eau De Toilette – Which Should I Buy?
Once again like most fragrance battles, this is a tough call. I would say that choosing comes down to your age and lifestyle.
For mature gentleman aged 30-35+ Elixir is going to be a good choice for most. For younger guys I think Elixir isn’t too great of a choice, so EDT will be the way to go.
But the EDT can be worn by guys of almost any age, it does smell that good.
The Price – Sauvage EDT runs at around £50 with Elixir £110. No question that the EDT is better value for money.
Uniqueness – There’s so many guys wearing the EDT and many don’t have or won’t pay for Elixir. If you want to be more unique, the Elixir wins out.
The Best Signature Scent – Once again I would go for Elixir for older guys and EDT for younger guys.
The Best To Add To A Collection – I think that Elixir is a great add to any collection. It’s quite unique, you get the Sauvage DNA while having a more rounded and mature style to it.
I am lucky enough to own them both, and happy owning them both too.
Now I know there’s also an EDP and a Parfum version of Sauvage, but I’ve focussed on the original and newest versions in this comparison.
I think they’re both different enough to have a proper comparison and decide on which of these two you’d go for.
With that said, which do you think is best, and which would you go for? Let me know in the poll below.
