Argentina have won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on penalties after a 3 – 3 draw against France went into extra time and finally on to penalties.
It was an incredible game and finally Leo Messi has won the World Cup for Argentina.
Could this have been the best ever World Cup final? It possible could have been.
Argentina were all over France and race into a 2-0 lead, with Messi scoring a penalty that Di Maria won.
Di Maria then made it 2-0 to Argentina in the 36th minute with a great counter attacking goal.
The win looked a certainty for Argentina. France were poor, and even took off 2 players before half time.
The second half and it was more of the same, Argentina dominance and they looked like cruising to victory. Then with around 10 minutes to go a mistake from Otamendi let in Kolo Muani who won a penalty.
Mbappe stepped up and scored.
Then a minute later an incredible move from France saw Mbappe play a one-two and then volley in a ball and made it 2-2.
It was a brilliant goal which took the game to extra time.
It looked for a while it would go to penalties and then Messi steps up and scores again. It’s now 3-2 to Argentina in the 2nd half of extra time.
But France and Mbappe come back again. A shot is fired in and the ball is charged down, but hits an arm and the referee gives the penalty to France.
Mbappe steps up to get his hattrick and does. It’s 3-3.
Kolo Muani was one-on-one with keeper Martinez in added time of extra time, it was a certain goal, but Martinez saved.
Argentina let the lead slip twice and almost lost it at the last. Then came the penalties.
A save by Emi Martinez off a Coman penalty then when Tchouameni missed it was down to Montiel who could win the World Cup for Argentina.
He stepped up and scored giving Argentina the win, 4-2 on penalties after extra time.
What a game!
I think Argentina played the best, they should have won it in 90 minutes, but France to their credit came back a few times and could have won it in the end.
It’s already a classic, and this could go down as the best ever World Cup final.
